Return to Morocco: Customs Exemption for MREs Starting a Business
Moroccan residents abroad who return permanently to Morocco can benefit from customs exemption for certain used materials and tools. A facility that can help those who want to resume professional activity in the country, but within a very specific limit.
Permanent return to Morocco is not only about furniture, clothing or personal effects. The Moroccan Customs Administration guide also provides an advantage for MREs who exercised a lucrative activity abroad and wish to return with professional equipment.

Employees, merchants or self-employed professionals can thus benefit from total exemption for their used materials and tools, provided their value does not exceed 150,000 dirhams. Beyond this amount, payment of duties and taxes at the current rate becomes required.
A boost to resume an activity
This measure may concern an MRE returning to the country with equipment already used for work, to create a small business or continue a profession exercised abroad. However, this is not free commercial import, but a facility granted as part of permanent return.
The guide also specifies that facilities related to permanent return cover used furniture, personal effects, clothing articles in use, as well as certain household appliances, limited to one unit per appliance category. Items without commercial character are also admitted duty-free, but within a limit of 30,000 dirhams.
A limited and regulated exemption
The advantage on used materials and tools is therefore not unlimited. Customs clearly sets the ceiling at 150,000 dirhams. If the value of the material exceeds this threshold, duties and taxes are due under the conditions provided by the current tariff.
The MRE must also justify their situation abroad. The guide specifically mentions the residence card or any document proving habitual residence outside Morocco, as well as a card or employment contract, merchant card, residence visa of more than six months or any document justifying socioprofessional status.
A return to prepare in advance
This rule can represent a real advantage for MREs considering returning to Morocco with a professional project. But it requires preparing your file before moving and clearly distinguishing used equipment intended for activity from goods of a commercial nature.
