Report Reveals Foreign Inmate Demographics in Moroccan Prisons

A recent report from the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR), presented as part of the 2025 budget discussions, provides an overview of the foreign prison population in Morocco.
Thus, as of October 31, 2024, 1,643 foreign inmates, including 87 women, would be serving their sentences in Moroccan prisons.
Not surprisingly, the majority of these inmates (more than 80%, or 1,320 people) are from other African countries. Among them, there are notably 94 Algerians, 19 Tunisians, 11 Libyans, 11 Egyptians and 8 Mauritanians.
Europeans represent 15% of this foreign prison population, with 246 inmates. The most represented nationalities are Spanish (82 inmates), French (71 inmates) and English (19 inmates).
Asia and America are less represented. There are 49 Asian inmates, including 9 Syrians and 5 Israelis, and only 16 American inmates, including 6 Brazilians.
Finally, the report indicates that 12 foreign inmates have dual nationality.
