Report: Morocco’s Female Employment Rate Lags Behind Global Average

In Morocco, the activity rate of women is low compared to the level recorded worldwide, according to the first report on the economic participation of women, published by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM).
In this report released on International Women’s Rights Day, March 8, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) notes a large gap between the different countries, thus marking deep inequalities, reports Aujourd’hui le Maroc.
For example, the employment rate among women in Morocco is 16.7%, while in Sweden it is 78.3%. The decline recorded in Morocco is the same in Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey. But it’s not just women who are affected. Men are experiencing the same situation.
The report also looked at the situation of women entrepreneurs. They are around 12.8% in Morocco, while in Portugal and Croatia they are respectively 37.2% and 31.5%. According to the UfM, Europe and the MENA region are below the global percentage of 6.2% of women entrepreneurs who own established businesses. This would be due to the difficult access to loans.
For Nasser Kamel, Secretary General of the UfM, "this exercise of regular reporting will make it possible to measure and report on the evolution of women’s rights and to provide policy recommendations to bridge the gender gap in the region".
