Record Heat Wave Drives Morocco’s Electricity Demand to All-Time High

Electricity consumption in Morocco has reached a record level, standing at 7,310 megawatts, according to the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development.
Morocco has experienced a peak in electricity consumption, reaching 7,310 megawatts, an increase of 0.8% compared to the peak recorded in 2022, according to a statement from the ministry published on Friday, noting that global warming affecting sectors such as tourism, agriculture and fishing would be the cause of this increase.
Thanks to an availability of 8,300 megawatts and the contribution of renewable energy sources, the kingdom’s electricity system was able to cope with this strong demand. According to climate projections, temperatures will exceed 37°C in the Mediterranean region, particularly in North Africa, southern Spain and Turkey, for a period of 60 days by 2050, compared to 30 currently.
To address these climate risks, the ministry calls for more rational use of electricity. "In addition to ensuring Morocco’s energy security and strengthening the adaptive capacity of the most vulnerable sectors to the risks of climate change, this call for energy efficiency will also contribute to reducing the national energy bill," said Minister Leila Ben Ali.
