Ramadan Tradition Fades as Marrakech Tanjia Prices Soar

The people of Marrakech have been forced to change their eating habits during Ramadan. Over the past two years, the residents of the ochre city have abandoned the traditional Marrakech Tanjia, a highly prized dish, due to its exorbitant price.
The Marrakech Tanjia has become an inaccessible luxury for the people of Marrakech. Currently, an average 3-kilo Tanjia costs a minimum of 500 dirhams. This increase would be due to the soaring prices of red meat, an essential ingredient in the preparation of this dish, reports the local site kech24.
In recent months, the prices of red meat have maintained their upward trend in most neighborhoods of Marrakech. The cancellation of the celebration of Eid al-Adha this year has not changed anything. Professionals in the sector, seeking to take advantage of the situation, are being pointed out.
Meanwhile, the prices of sheep and cattle have seen a significant drop in recent weeks, after King Mohammed VI’s call to refrain from celebrating the Feast of Sacrifice.
