Ramadan Crackdown: 60 Food Safety and Price Violations in Marrakech Markets

During the first three weeks of the month of Ramadan, 60 offenses were recorded on the market in the Marrakech-Safi region. These violations on prices and the quality of food products were observed by control commissions from the Division of Economic Affairs and Coordination (DAEC) of the wilaya of the area.
Presenting the results of three weeks of intensive controls, the head of the DAEC of the wilaya, Maâti Alga, indicated to the MAP that around 700 sales outlets were inspected and 60 reports were drawn up during the first 20 days of the holy month. Among the 60 violations observed, 28 relate to the non-display of prices, 22 to the non-presentation of invoices and 10 to non-compliance with hygiene standards, including the use of plastic bags, he detailed in his statement.
The DAEC boss also said that the various control services of the prefecture of Marrakech carried out raids in the different wholesale and retail outlets as well as in rural or urban areas, to ensure the normal and regular supply of local markets and the stability of food prices. The mission also aimed to avoid any increase or monopoly, due to the situation the Morocco is going through because of the spread of Covid-19, added Mr. Alga.
The dynamism of the prefecture had led the wali of the Marrakech-Safi region, governor of the prefecture of Marrakech, Karim Kassi-Lahlou, to call on the various control services to intensify their presence on the ground and to act firmly to preserve the purchasing power of consumers and protect their health safety.
