Ramadan and social media: iftar photos divide

During the holy month of Ramadan, many Moroccan influencers post daily on social media photos of tables laden with dishes and drinks for the breaking of the fast (iftar). A behavior perceived as provocation by some Internet users who are having a hard time sacrificing this tradition in this context of continuous price increases.
Every year, Internet users are divided on the fact of publishing iftar images during the holy month. While some are in favor of it, others disapprove of this way of doing things. If the former see in these publications a source of inspiration to vary their menus for iftar, the latter on the other hand condemn this behavior which they consider as a provocation, given the difficult situation that some families are going through who lack the bare minimum on their tables.
This phenomenon, which is noticeable during the month of Ramadan, has negative psychological impacts, warns the clinical psychologist, Faiçal Tahari, noting that social networks are accessible to all socio-professional categories. In a statement to the MAP, the specialist argues that this practice especially affects adolescents who begin to make comparisons between family menus and those of iftar tables broadcast on social networks.
In this context of a general rise in prices on the markets, the phenomenon is more pronounced, in the sense that some families do not have the means to obtain certain basic products such as meat and fish. The psychologist calls on Moroccans to cultivate sharing and avoid frustrating their neighbor during the holy month, considering the publication of iftar table photos as contrary to the culture of sharing.
Furthermore, Faiçal Tahari insisted on the need to avoid excesses and waste during this fasting period, as Ramadan is an opportunity to repent of one’s faults, to draw closer to God and to thank him for his blessings. During the holy month, the rich and the poor are equal and must show compassion towards their loved ones, he concluded.
