Rabat Taxi Drivers Protest City’s Plan to Allow Ride-Hailing Services

Rabat taxi drivers are angry at the city authorities who are preparing to grant permits to several VTC (vehicle transport with driver) companies.
Unlike the authorities in Casablanca who want to ban VTCs, those in Rabat are about to issue permits to VTC companies. A decision denounced by the taxi drivers of the Moroccan capital who call on the local authorities to withdraw the driving licenses of the drivers recruited by these companies, reports the daily Al Akhbar.
The taxi drivers, very upset with the Rabat authorities, are inviting the latter, and in particular the Wali of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, to dialogue with them before the issuance of permits to VTC companies. If the two parties fail to reach an agreement, the intervention of the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, will be sought.
Samir Farabi, the president of the Democratic Transport Union, estimates for his part that the non-issuance of permits to VTC companies would lead to the unemployment of nearly 7,000 people and the loss of income for thousands of families. This anger of the taxi drivers contrasts with the dynamic of Morocco positioning itself as a leader in the VTC market on the continent.
