Rabat Residents Face Evictions as City Prepares for Urban Renewal

The residents and merchants of the Ocean district in Rabat are angry. And for good reason, the competent authorities have ordered them to clear the premises before the month of Ramadan, in view of the launch of major projects planned as part of the urban modernization of the capital.
The competent authorities of the wilaya and the municipality have already begun to demolish unauthorized constructions on the public domain, before asking the residents and merchants concerned to leave their homes and businesses before the month of Ramadan, which starts on March 1.
Faced with this situation, "some families have expressed their anger, considering that it would be difficult for them to find an alternative in such a short time," reports Al Akhbar.
Other residents have called for a postponement of the decision in order to allow them to live the sacred month under good conditions. But "the competent authorities have promised the families concerned to provide them with the necessary assistance to facilitate their move".
The authorities of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra and the municipality had already proceeded to demolish illegal constructions, dwellings and businesses in the Sania Gharbia district, after having put the occupants on notice to vacate the premises.
