Rabat Orders Removal of Unauthorized Balconies and Terraces

Balconies and terraces are no longer allowed in Rabat. The authorities of the Moroccan capital are preparing to launch a campaign to remove these anarchic installations.
After satellite dishes and air conditioners, the local authorities of Rabat are turning their attention to balconies and terraces installed without authorization in front of buildings, which are detrimental to the aesthetics of the city. In a circular dated February 13, addressed to the syndics of residential condominiums, the authorities of the Hay Riad district have summoned residents to "restore the facades to their original state, in accordance with the provisions of the laws and regulations in force," reports Médias24.
This campaign, which is part of the "Rabat, City of Light" and "Rabat, Green City" projects, aims to preserve the urban aesthetics and improve the living environment of the Moroccan capital, it is specified. Thus, in accordance with law 66.12 on offenses in the field of construction and buildings, any illegal or non-compliant structure installed on facades, roofs or balconies must be removed.
This includes awnings, plastic tents, tarpaulins, unauthorized roofs on balconies, unsanitary additions in steel, aluminum, wood, tile or glass, etc. The authorities are asking "to take all necessary measures to urge the residents of the buildings to immediately remove the aforementioned infractions within a period not exceeding 72 hours, from the date of receipt, under penalty of initiating public action".
