Rabat's Modernization Plan Sparks Concerns Among Residents

The Rabat municipal council met to discuss the city’s new development plan. This project, which aims to modernize the capital, is causing great concern among the residents. Some fear being evicted from their homes and rehoused on the outskirts.

The plan notably provides for the construction of high-rise buildings and the demolition of some houses to make way for new residential and commercial spaces. Mosques, neighborhood markets, parking lots and green spaces are also planned, as well as an esplanade with a view of the sea.

Strict architectural standards will be imposed on new constructions, particularly regarding the size of balconies, window dimensions, materials and facade colors. The objective is to ensure aesthetic consistency in the renovated neighborhoods, indicates Rue20.

Several neighborhoods of the city will be affected by these transformations, including Yakoub El Mansour, Agdal-Riyad, Hassan, Youssoufia and Souissi. Allal El Fassi Avenue will be widened, Al Irfane will be redesigned and the "green neighborhood" concept will be integrated into the developments.

The plan also provides for a revamp of the transport network, with the widening of certain streets and the improvement of the coastal roads. New tramway lines and modern road infrastructures will complete the system.

If the project aims to modernize Rabat and improve the living environment of its inhabitants, it nevertheless raises legitimate concerns. Residents fear being evicted from their homes, as has recently been the case in a neighborhood of Casablanca.
