Rabat’s Medina: 300 Unsafe Buildings Slated for Demolition or Repair

At least 300 buildings are labeled by the urban commune of the city of Rabat and the Rabat Region Development Company as real dangers to the population.
In the perspective of the work aimed at demolishing or strengthening these threatened buildings, the urban commune of the city of Rabat and the Rabat Region Development Company, respectively the project owner and the delegated project owner, have launched a tender for the studies, monitoring, control and piloting of the demolition and/or strengthening work of the buildings threatening to collapse in the medina of Rabat, reports the newspaper Aujourd’hui le Maroc.
The most worrying according to the Rabat Region Development Company is that "the buildings threatening to collapse do not comply with the standard regulatory provisions". Worse, "they are not governed by a specific standardization and do not lend themselves to the usual instrumental diagnosis, provided for reinforced concrete, masonry, and other standardized structures such as auscultations and core samples".
From these observations, it is clear according to Rabat Region Development that "the preservation of these buildings escapes any conventional approach, especially since there is no reference framework for assessing their structural stability".
It should be recalled that the objective of this initiative is in line with the "Cities without Slums" program and aims to improve the environment of the region by upgrading unhealthy housing areas and houses threatening to collapse. But also, the rehabilitation and preservation
