Rabat Mayor Defends Demolitions Amid Resident Outcry

The mayor of Rabat, Fatiha El Moudni, broke her silence to provide clarifications on the ongoing demolition operations in the Moroccan capital, which are causing anger and indignation among the residents.
At a press conference at the headquarters of the Municipal Council, Fatiha El Moudni deplored that "certain parties are exploiting these actions to spread false information and engage in political one-upmanship in order to instrumentalize the distress of the inhabitants," reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. The mayor of Rabat assured that these operations are part of the implementation of the city’s urban development plan and respect "the legal framework in force."
"The Municipal Council is acting in full compliance with legal procedures, with total respect for the law and with absolute objectivity. The objective is to make Rabat one of the most attractive cities, not only as an administrative capital, but also as a leading tourist and cultural destination, while strengthening its attractiveness for investments. The ambition is to improve the quality of life in the capital and modernize its infrastructure in order to contribute to sustainable development," explained the city’s mayor.
El Moudni also denied the accusations of abuse of power aimed at forcing residents to vacate their homes, insisting that all legal procedures regarding expropriation for public utility and road widening have been scrupulously respected. "This measure concerned all residents of the five districts of the capital, without distinction of social class, whether they were wealthy, middle class or economically vulnerable," she clarified.
The mayor of the capital reaffirmed the determination of the Municipal Council to continue its development actions, in compliance with the texts in force and the rights of citizens.
