Queen Máxima's Morocco Visit Marked by Official Meetings and Protocol Missteps

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, 51, recently made a three-day visit to Morocco, in her capacity as Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Inclusive Finance and Development. A look back at a stay in the kingdom with a few anecdotes.

Alongside the very formal and official acts, the stay of Queen Máxima of the Netherlands was marked by protocol errors and what appeared to be an institutional dysfunction. The Queen of the Netherlands was received in audience by the President of the Government, Aziz Akhannouch, the Secretary General of the Government, Mohamed el Hajoui, and exchanged with the Ministers of Economy, Nadia Fettah Alaloui, of Industry, Ryad Mezzour, and the Delegate Minister for Digital Transition, Ghita Mezzour. But she did not have a meeting with King Mohammed VI.

The Moroccan royal family also did not find time in its agenda to receive Queen Máxima during the first days of her visit. An awkward attitude that was corrected on the last day of the Queen of the Netherlands’ visit, by the meeting she had with Mohammed VI’s eldest sister, Lalla Meryem (60), at her residence in Rabat. But curiously, the Moroccan princess spoke in Spanish with the Dutch queen, reports El Español.

Queen Máxima also visited the Rabat souk, stopping in many shops to talk directly with the owners and get some art objects and accessories as souvenirs of her stay during which she wore very colorful clothes.
