US Pushes for New UN Envoy to Restart Stalled Western Sahara Talks

Since March 2019, the negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario regarding the Sahara have stalled. A delay that is too long in the eyes of American diplomacy, which is demanding that UN Secretary-General António Guterres appoint a new envoy to resume the discussions.
The resumption of negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario is a concern for the United States, which made it known on Monday, March 29. The position of the last UN mediator, the former German president, Horst Köhler, 78, has remained vacant since he resigned, for health reasons.
According to diplomatic sources, in early 2020, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia and former President of the United Nations General Assembly, Miroslav Lajcak, was cited as the next UN mediator for the Sahara, but so far, no information has leaked from the corridors of the institution. And here is Guterres, according to diplomats, with in his hands, a position for which the candidates are not rushing, in addition to requiring the blessing of Morocco.
