Protesters in Canary Islands Decry Migrant Detention and Border Policies

The Canarias Libre platform of the migrant detention center in the Canary Islands invited around a hundred people to the Plaza Candelaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to demonstrate against "the policies that have made the Mediterranean and the Atlantic the biggest graveyard in the world".
The demonstration coincided with the transfer of the first 80 migrants from this center to the "camp of shame" located in the former Las Raices barracks in La Laguna.
"We denounce the border closure policy led by countries like Morocco, which make us accomplices of the mistreatment inflicted on migrants," explains the platform in its manifesto.
The platform also denounces inhumane practices that threaten the dignity of people and observed in recent months on the occasion of repatriation flights via commercial aircraft to Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal".
The platform also expressed its concern about the rise of hate speech against migrants, which fuels racism and xenophobia and encourages rejection rather than acceptance. It also stressed the lack of humanitarian resources and reception of migrants, leading to an increase in deaths at sea, the poor assistance of legal aid and translation services, as well as overcrowding in reception centers.
