Private Schools in Morocco Face Backlash Over Tax Exemption Request

The lobby of private schools has demanded from the head of government the suppression of deductions from the National Social Security Fund, as well as an exemption from the penalties provided for in the event of late payment of taxes. The request has scandalized Moroccans who have expressed their anger on social networks.
In a letter addressed to the head of government, the Federation of Private Education in Morocco and the Union of Major Schools have requested state aid to avoid a possible "wage freeze". The group has explicitly attempted to negotiate a tax exemption for the current year, and to request a release on employees’ salaries in case parents refuse to pay their monthly contributions. The Executive considers the request inappropriate, especially when we know the situation Morocco is going through, where resources are focused on finding solutions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Several media outlets have looked into the issue, explaining that a few months ago, the two federations managed to obtain significant tax cuts, amounting to billions of dirhams. The lobby, for its part, insists on the economic and social repercussions in the event of non-intervention by the State, particularly on employment; which would further jeopardize the functioning of the economy.
