Pratt & Whitney to make Morocco more self-sufficient in maintaining its military aircraft

The contract was announced on Tuesday, September 8, by the US Department of War. It was awarded to Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of RTX, by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Wright-Patterson Air Base in Ohio.

Morocco is one of the eleven beneficiary countries, along with Argentina, Greece, South Korea, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Iraq, Taiwan, Thailand and Saudi Arabia. The 19.314 million dollars therefore correspond to the contract’s overall funding and not solely to Morocco’s share.

The services are to continue until March 15, 2029. The US Air Force specifies that 1.233 million dollars was committed when the contract was awarded.

A previous contract concerned F-16 engines

Washington does not specify which Pratt & Whitney equipment is covered by this new contract. Morocco is already participating, however, in a US program to refurbish the modules of the F100 engines fitted to its F-16s.

In its official notice of April 24, 2023, the Pentagon stated that Pratt & Whitney personnel were to provide training and advice to the teams responsible for operating and maintaining the F100-PW-100/220/220E/229 engines used by the F-15s and F-16s, with the aim of gradually making them self-sufficient.

Morocco had also ordered F100-PW-229 engines from Pratt & Whitney in the United States for its F-16 fighter aircraft.

The previous technical assistance contract was due to end on March 15, 2026. The new contract awarded on September 8 uses very similar wording: Pratt & Whitney must provide engineering and technical assistance services until an autonomous technical capability has been developed.

The new contract thus confirms the continuation of Pratt & Whitney’s technical support for Morocco through March 2029. However, the US document specifies neither the financial share intended for the kingdom nor the equipment that will be specifically covered.
