UN Praises Peaceful Passage of Africa Eco Race Through Disputed Guerguerat Zone

The United Nations (UN) congratulated the Moroccan authorities for having ensured that the stage of the "Africa Eco Race" rally, linking Morocco and Mauritania, crossed the buffer zone of Guerguerat "peacefully" on Monday. Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, emphasized this during a press briefing in New York.
During his press briefing, Stéphane Dujarric recalled that the UN Secretary-General, concerned about the situation, had called on Saturday for "the greatest restraint and to defuse tensions" following the threats and gesticulations of the Polisario and its relays aimed at hindering the passage of the Africa Eco Race in Guerguerat. Antonio Guterres demanded the "maintenance of regular civilian and commercial traffic" in Guerguerat and called for abstaining from any action likely to aggravate the status quo in the buffer zone.
The Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General reiterated on Monday "the commitment of the United Nations to work so that the different parties reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara conflict, in accordance with the resolutions of the Security Council".
The "Africa Eco Race", which connects Monaco to Dakar by crossing Morocco, passing through the Southern Provinces, is in its twelfth edition this year. The start was given last week at the port of Tanger Med. It saw the participation of 688 competitors from 34 nationalities and 266 vehicles.
