US Praises Morocco's Police Dog Training for Counterterrorism Efforts

A report from the U.S. Department of State has highlighted the police dogs trained in Morocco and the method used in their training, as part of counterterrorism programs.

The report, cited by Hespress, states that the United States had provided police dogs, specialized in explosive detection, to five foreign countries including Morocco. The experience was not conclusive in Jordan, due to the death of 10 dogs between 2008 and 2016 during the training operations.

In August 2017, the evaluation carried out by U.S. officials visiting Morocco had concluded that the police dog training program met the required standards and that the food provided was of very high quality.

The counterterrorism assistance program had funded, as part of the plan for explosive detection by police dogs, trainers as well as a veterinarian for a period of 4 months.

In February 2019, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) had appointed 28 new police dog handlers known as "cynophilic police officers", including female police officers.
