Poverty Linked to High Rates of Domestic Violence in Morocco, Survey Finds

Domestic violence in Morocco is often caused by poverty and material conflicts of interest. 55% of women and 74% of men in a survey conducted by the High Commission for Planning have emphasized this.
Lack of communication is also listed among the causes of domestic violence. According to the HCP, this form of violence is the most widespread and manifests itself in a silent way. But domestic violence is not the only one whose determining factor is poverty.
15% of women say that violence in public places is due to poverty, while 40% of men explain it by the consumption of drugs and alcohol. 15% of women and 2% of men attribute it to unemployment.
In Morocco, even if people are aware of the causes and consequences of violence against women, 58% of women and 57% of men do not know the law passed in this regard. In rural areas, it is even worse. 70% of women and 69% of men, according to the HCP. Among the people who know this law, 45% of women and 31% of men consider it insufficient to guarantee the protection of women against violence.
This survey also shows that women are better informed about non-governmental associations than about state structures dedicated to supporting and protecting women victims of violence.
