Portuguese Man Sentenced in Morocco for Illegal Firearms Smuggling

The Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal of Tangier sentenced, on Thursday, September 26, a Portuguese national to 2 years in prison, for his alleged involvement in a case of possession and attempted introduction of firearms and live ammunition into Moroccan territory, without legal authorization.
The prison sentence was accompanied by a fine of 138,588 dirhams, in favor of the Moroccan customs, while the firearms and ammunition were seized.
With the help of an interpreter, the Portuguese admitted the facts before the Court, specifying however that he had no knowledge of the Moroccan legislation which requires prior authorization for the carrying of weapons.
Last June, the defendant had been arrested at the Port of Tanger-Med, as he was about to bring into Morocco 5 rifles, more than 1,000 cartridges and 50 live bullets, which he had hidden in his van.
