Poll: 41% of French Support Complete Immigration Ban, Survey Finds

More than 4 out of 10 French people are in favor of zero immigration in France, according to a poll conducted by the CSA Institute. The issue will likely be addressed during the 2022 presidential campaign.

According to this poll conducted for CNEWS, and whose results were made public on Thursday, 41% of respondents would be in favor of a country without migrants, legal or illegal, while 59% are against. In detail, one in two French people aged 65 and over (45%) are in favor of strict control of migration flows. Among the French aged 50-64 and the young people aged 18-24, the result is 42% in favor and 58% against.

From the point of view of social status, the inactive French are the most favorable to zero immigration (45%), followed by the category of the most privileged French (43%), composed of business leaders, liberal professions or those with higher incomes in the private sector. In terms of political sensitivity, 92% of National Rally (far-right) voters are in favor of zero immigration, compared to 72% for right-wing voters and 63% for Republican sympathizers.

On the opposite side, the left is strongly against the halt of legal immigration, with the Greens in the lead with 93% of green voters against, followed by La France Insoumise (88%), the Socialist Party (81%) and the left (excluding the radical left) (86%).

The debate on immigration has resurfaced in recent days and will undoubtedly be one of the main themes that will be addressed during the next presidential campaign. "We must stop illegal and legal immigration," declared on October 2 the potential but not yet declared candidate Eric Zemmour, during a conference in Lille. "I want to stop migration flows. Especially from a civilization far removed from ours...," he said during the Punchline show on CNEWS.

On the right, Valérie Pécresse wants to "stop uncontrolled immigration," she assured on Tuesday, when presenting her draft constitutional revision. The president of the National Rally, Marine Le Pen, for her part, intends to "drastically reduce" immigration by adopting a law to reform "the entire law applicable to foreigners". For his part, Arnaud Montebourg would rather opt for the implementation of "limited economic immigration to sectors under pressure".
