Polisario Front Threatens to Resume Armed Conflict with Morocco over Sahara Buffer Zone

In a statement published on Monday, the Polisario Front brandishes the threat of resuming arms against Morocco. It says it opposes the intrusion of any "military, security or civilian element" into the Guerguerat buffer zone, located on the border between Mauritania and the Sahara.
The Polisario thus threatens to break the 1991 ceasefire. It says it has noted the presence of a large number of "gendarmes" and Moroccan "other security forces" in civilian clothes in the Guerguerat buffer zone and warns against any further intrusion.
The Front also calls on the UN and the "Security Council in particular" to assume their responsibility. Since 1991, the UN peacekeepers of Minurso have been responsible for monitoring compliance with the ceasefire in the Moroccan Sahara. Their mandate was also extended until October 31, 2021 at the last virtual meeting of the UN Security Council. A resolution that is not to the liking of the Polisario.
