Police Officer Fires Weapon During Arrest of Six in Kenitra, Morocco

Thursday 7 May 2020, by Ginette

A police inspector was forced to use his service weapon after six individuals violated the state of health emergency in Kenitra. At least, this is what the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN) claims.

It all started with an intervention to arrest the six defendants "for exchange of blows and injuries" using bladed weapons in the Al Wahda neighborhood. According to a statement from the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN), once on the scene, the police elements were attacked by "the defendants who engaged in violent confrontation with them". To protect his colleagues and neutralize the danger, the chief inspector was forced to fire a shot with his service weapon. This allowed him to arrest one of the suspects, the DGSN said.

It was only in the evening that the five other suspects involved in this incident were arrested. According to the initial findings, two people were accidentally and superficially injured by the fragments of the fired bullet. In its statement, the DGSN reported that "the two injured persons, as well as the policeman, who was also a victim of concussion, were taken to the hospital to receive the necessary care. Meanwhile, the investigation continues to determine the extent of their involvement in this case".

Pending the conclusions of the investigation conducted by the prefectural judicial police service, under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office, the six defendants were taken into custody.
