PJD Leader Slams Justice Minister Over Proposed Consensual Relationship Laws in Morocco

The Secretary General of the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), Abdelilah Benkirane, publicly attacked the Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, regarding the ongoing debate on "consensual relationships" in the context of the reform of the Penal Code and the Family Code.
"We are in these circumstances (social crisis), and you are talking about consensual relationships [...] What are you looking for by talking about consensual relationships?", Benkirane thus addressed Minister Ouahbi on Saturday, in front of the mausoleum of King Mohammed V, on the occasion of the 64th anniversary of his death. And he added: "You don’t want the State to intervene when a man finds his wife doing something. He will then have to take justice into his own hands!".
Since the announcement of the reforms of the Penal Code and the Family Code by the Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, the issues of individual freedoms and gender equality are causing a lively controversy in Morocco, with the conservatives of the Islamist party PJD on one side and the modernists on the other.
