Peru Seeks to Restore Morocco Ties for Crucial Fertilizer Supply

The new Peruvian government led by its president Dina Boluarte is resuming negotiations with Morocco, which had refused it fertilizers because of the authorities’ turnaround on the Sahara issue.
Former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, "pro-Polisario", had broken off relations with Morocco due to his change of position on the Moroccanness of the Sahara. He has since been ousted from power. The new authorities are making the restoration of relations with Morocco a priority. Especially since this will allow them to obtain a good part of the fertilizers needed for the agricultural sector. Peru hopes to obtain a donation of 150,000 tons of urea from Morocco to support Peruvian farmers.
"The minister is coordinating with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco to look at this file and a joint meeting will be held shortly with the Agrarian Commission and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. We will report on the measures that have been taken," said the Deputy Minister of Development of Family Agriculture and Agricultural and Irrigation Infrastructure, Christian Barrantes Bravo, during his presentation to Congress.
