Passenger Traffic Surges Between Morocco and Spain in Early 2025

During the first two months of 2025, more than 731,232 travelers transited between the ports of northern Morocco and those of southern Spain, mainly Moroccans residing abroad.
According to data from the Port Authority of Cadiz, passenger traffic between the ports of Tanger Med, Tanger Ville and Ceuta, and those of Algeciras and Tarifa, recorded a record increase during the months of January and February, exceeding 731,232. As for the number of vehicles that crossed the two shores during the period, it reached 165,455 units, the same source specifies. The maritime line between Tanger Med and Algeciras absorbed more than 40% of the total passenger and vehicle traffic, which underlines its key role in the connection between Africa and Europe.
In January 2024, passenger traffic between Tanger Med and Algeciras had normalized after the Covid-19 crisis, with 2.7 million passengers, i.e. 30% more than in 2022. Freight traffic was 122 million tons, i.e. 13.6% more than in 2022. A record in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean, indicates the Port Authority of Cadiz. Similarly, maritime traffic increased by 17% with 16,900 ships, including 1,113 mega-ships over 290 meters long.
In addition, the port of the Bay of Cadiz decided in mid-November last year to resume its links with Morocco, suspended since 2014. "Among the strengths of the port of the Bay of Cadiz, we can mention its ability to manage all types of traffic, not only road, but also fishing, containers, bulk goods, cruises, even shipbuilding and offshore industry," they stressed.
