Participant Dies of Cardiac Arrest During Grueling Sahara Desert Marathon

One of the participants in the 35th edition of the Marathon des sables died on Monday afternoon following a cardiac arrest in the dunes of Merzouga. Close to fifty years old, nothing suggested such a tragedy, as he had met all the medical requirements prior to the race.
The man had even successfully completed the first stage. After his discomfort, he was taken care of by two other competing doctors, who triggered his beacon’s SOS button and began the cardiac massage protocol, before the rescue team assigned to the competition took over. Death was pronounced after 45 minutes of resuscitation. In 35 years, this is the third death recorded during the race.
The announcement of the death of this participant, whose anonymity has been preserved, was made on Monday evening by Patrick Bauer, Race Director. He stressed that the entire organizing team as well as the competitors are deeply affected by this tragedy. He also, on his own behalf and on behalf of all the race participants, expressed his sincere condolences to the deceased’s loved ones and family. He specified that a psychological unit will be set up to support those who express the need.
The competition continues out of respect for all those who have invested in the success of the event. A minute of silence will be observed before the start of the third stage, in tribute to the deceased participant.
