Paris Court Erases €24,544 in Debt, Ending Seven-Year Repayment Plan
In France, the Paris Court of Appeal erased 24,544 euros in debt for a man born in Morocco who had been evicted from his home. An initial ruling required him to make repayments over seven years, but judges reassessed his income and expenses.

In March 2024, the Paris Judicial Court set monthly payments of 163.04 euros for 84 months for the former tenant, with the remaining balance to be erased at the end of the plan. His debts totaled 24,544.45 euros, including 24,300.43 euros owed to the property company that had rented him an apartment since 2005.

The man, who left the home after being evicted in 2024, challenged the plan. Before the Court of Appeal, the company’s manager argued that he could repay 300 to 350 euros a month, in part because he receives assistance from a social grocery store. The debtor, 56, says instead that he now lives in social housing and cannot return to work, according to the ruling of October 1, 2026.
The calculation that overturned the seven-year repayment plan
The court reviewed the figures. It counted 1,033.32 euros in disability benefits and 461 euros in personalized housing assistance, paid directly to the organization housing him. His total resources therefore amounted to 1,494.32 euros, while the monthly expenses accepted by the court came to 1,522.72 euros.
The calculation left him with no capacity to repay. The judges also took into account his health, the lack of prospects for an increase in his income and the precarious nature of his housing. They found his financial situation to be “irretrievably compromised.”
The court therefore set aside the monthly repayment of 163.04 euros and ordered a personal recovery procedure without judicial liquidation, closing the case immediately. The 24,544.45 euros in debts listed in the file were erased, including the claim held by his former landlord.

The ruling also provides for his registration for five years in the national register of personal credit repayment incidents. It must be published in the Bodacc, so that any creditors who were not summoned can assert their rights within the prescribed period.
