Paraguay Parliament Backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara

Monday 23 December 2019, by Sylvanus

The Parliament of Paraguay has reiterated its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan aimed at resolving the Sahara issue. In this sense, the parliamentarians have adopted a new resolution.

The Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies has reaffirmed that "the autonomy initiative is the only credible and serious basis for a definitive solution within the framework of the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco and its territorial integrity". Moreover, the latest UN Security Council resolution calls for a solution that "can only be political, realistic, pragmatic, lasting and based on compromise," diplomatic sources indicate.

According to the same sources, the Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay has repeatedly designated Algeria as a party to this conflict on an equal footing with Morocco.
The Paraguayan parliamentarians approved this resolution - the third of its kind in less than two years - at their plenary session on December 11, 2019, it is specified.

In addition, the Paraguayan resolution commends Morocco for "continuing to take measures to consolidate human rights." Finally, this resolution calls for "the protection of the populations of the Tindouf camps through the census of these populations".
