OCP signs for 3.8 million tonnes of fertilizer in Brazil, but sales remain to be negotiated

The document was signed on Friday, September 18, in Jorf Lasfar, during the visit of Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, André de Paula, to the OCP industrial complex. It formalizes the agreement announced a few days earlier between Morocco and Brazil.

The 3.8 million tonnes could be supplied by OCP Nutricrops starting in 2026. This volume would cover 76% of Brazil’s phosphate fertilizer deficit, estimated at five million tonnes for the 2026–2027 agricultural season.

The document’s commercial scope nevertheless needs to be clarified. The memorandum does not constitute a firm order for 3.8 million tonnes. It sets a reference volume, but purchases will depend on the terms negotiated between OCP and the various Brazilian operators, reports CNN Brasil.

Brazil seeks to secure its fertilizer supplies

Brazil imports around 92% of the fertilizer it consumes. This strong dependence makes its agriculture vulnerable when conflicts disrupt maritime routes or reduce the availability of sulfur, ammonia and other raw materials needed to manufacture fertilizers.

Brasilia therefore regards Morocco as a supplier capable of quickly securing a large share of its needs. André de Paula believes that the partnership with OCP will eliminate the risk of shortages for the next agricultural season.

For OCP, the operation would further strengthen Brazil’s position among its main markets. The country already accounted for 23% of the group’s global revenue in 2025, tied with India. The Moroccan producer is simultaneously pursuing an increase in its production capacity for high-value-added fertilizers.

The agreement goes beyond fertilizer volumes alone. It provides for exchanges on soil mapping, biofertilizers, biostimulants, digital agriculture and the development of solutions adapted to Brazilian crops.

The two parties also want to examine investments in fertilizer production, processing, storage and logistics. OCP could thus deepen its presence in Brazil beyond its exports from Morocco.

No price or detailed delivery schedule has yet been disclosed. The memorandum therefore secures a framework for cooperation and a target that could reach 3.8 million tonnes, but the commercial contracts will still have to be concluded before the entire volume can be considered sold.
