Obesity Rates in Morocco Projected to Surge by 2035, Study Warns

Nearly half of the Moroccan population (46%) will be obese by 2035, according to forecasts by the World Obesity Forum.
Moroccans will be more exposed to overweight and obesity risks in the coming years. The prevalence of obesity will increase by 2.7% per year between 2020 and 2035, revealed the World Obesity Forum, predicting that more than 5 million Moroccans will suffer from morbid obesity by 2035.
Children will be the most affected, warns the organization, announcing a global doubling of the childhood obesity rate and an annual increase of 5.2% in Morocco by 2035 compared to 2020. Concretely, more than 30% of Moroccan children will be overweight or obese by 2035, according to estimates by the World Obesity Federation.
Globally, the management of obesity and related diseases should cost more than $4 trillion by 2035, or nearly 3% of global GDP. In Morocco, the cost of managing obesity and overweight-related diseases would increase from $470 million in 2020 to $933 million in 2035, the study notes, estimating these costs at nearly $595 million for the next two years.
