Nigeria-Morocco Talks Spark Concern Among Polisario Leaders Ahead of AU Summit

After the telephone conversation between King Mohammed VI and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, panic is beginning to spread among the leaders of the Polisario. Mohamed Ould Salek, the movement’s envoy, was received by President Buhari on Monday, February 1st.
This meeting between the two heads of state, which comes as a prelude to the ordinary summit of the African Union, scheduled for February 6 and 7 in Addis Ababa, is enough to worry the Polisario. The movement fears a possible proposal to suspend the "Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic" from the AU bodies. If this is the case, it wants to ensure the support of its allies.
Algeria, one of the Polisario’s historical allies, had indeed sent its Minister of Foreign Affairs to Nigeria on November 25th. He had discussed the Sahara issue and the Algeria-Nigeria gas pipeline project with President Buhari.
