Netflix Explores Moroccan Film Production Partnership in Talks with Government

Moroccan Minister of Culture Mehdi Bensaid met on Monday with the special envoy of the Netflix president. The objective is to negotiate the establishment of the American platform in Morocco to increase the annual turnover of foreign shoots in the kingdom by 2027.
This meeting aims to start a permanent collaboration with Netflix to encourage it to carry out more productions to highlight Morocco’s rich history. "The idea is to initiate an annual quota of American series and Moroccan co-productions with the CCM which will be devoted to our history, like what it does on French, English, Spanish, American history..." Bensaid explained to Médias24.
According to the Minister of Culture, Morocco can capture a small percentage of the billions of dollars that Netflix spends annually on the production of films and series. "Indeed, apart from the series Lioness and the feature film Lonely Planet that it is already producing with us for 190 MDH, we want it to settle in Morocco as it has just done in Nigeria," the minister specifies.
And to add: "The first step of this meeting will be to listen to them, then to put them in contact with the studios of Ouarzazate and the future studios of Marrakech so that they can work together throughout the year. This will allow this city specialized in film shoots to have real visibility over several years, particularly for television series with several seasons and dozens of episodes."
With the establishment of Netflix in Morocco, Bensaid hopes to place Morocco in the top 5 worldwide of foreign filming locations by 2027. "By the time other studios emerge, it is quite feasible to reach, in the long run, an annual turnover of one billion dollars, or ten times what we will achieve in 2022," he said. A second meeting with Netflix is scheduled for November to "finally get down to business."
