Naturalization in France: Moroccans Still Top the Ranking in 2024
The Moroccan community is confirming its strong roots in France. According to the latest figures from the French Ministry of the Interior, Moroccans remain by far the primary beneficiaries of the granting of French nationality in 2024, recording a sharp increase compared to the previous year.
Moroccan leadership is unwavering. According to the new edition of key immigration figures, 14,454 Moroccan nationals acquired French nationality during the year 2024. This figure marks an increase of 8.7% compared to 2023, consolidating the Kingdom’s position as the leading country of origin for new French citizens.
While Morocco is leading the pack, the Maghreb trio monopolizes the top of the ranking. Algeria comes in second place with 12,002 naturalizations, showing a more moderate increase of 5.2%. Tunisia completes this podium with 7,250 acquisitions. Although Tunisians recorded the strongest growth in the top 3 (+13.9%), the volume of Moroccan naturalizations remains nearly double that of their eastern neighbors.
In total, these three Maghreb countries account for 33,706 new French citizens, representing nearly a third of all acquisitions recorded on French territory in 2024.
The detailed statistics provided by the ministry also reveal the profiles of the applicants. For Moroccan nationals, 28.8% of nationality acquisitions were made through early declarations. This mechanism mainly concerns young people born in France or having grown up there. This rate is very close to that observed among Algerians (28.6%), but contrasts sharply with other communities such as Turks or Comorians, for whom this mode of acquisition exceeds 77%.
Overall, France naturalized 101,509 people in 2024, regardless of nationality, an increase of 6.7%. The top ten countries of origin account for 53% of these new passports.
