Mysterious Illness Strikes Moroccan Dromedaries, Baffling Breeders and Tourism Industry

Affected by a rare disease, many dromedaries have died in Zagora and Mhamid El Ghizlane, to the surprise of breeders and tourism professionals. The latter are calling on the authorities and competent bodies for help.

The origin of this as yet unidentified disease is not yet clear. In a statement to Al3Omk, many breeders suspect that the grass consumed by the animals may have been the source of this disease. However, they are surprised that some dromedaries that do not graze in the wild have also been affected. They are also surprised by the appearance of this disease, which they had never observed before and by the speed with which it has spread to different areas. Faced with the situation, some breeders have given herbs and turned to traditional treatments, such as cauterization, to try to save the sick dromedaries.

Investors in the region’s tourism sector, who own dromedaries and use them to organize excursions for tourists, also express concerns. They fear losing even more livestock, which could affect tourism activity, an essential source of income for many families, as this period coincides with an increase in tourist bookings during the month of October. It is a period eagerly awaited by tourism professionals to make up for the stagnation of the previous summer months. Helpless, they call on the authorities and competent bodies to come to their aid and save the sick camels.

Aware of the situation, the services of the National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA) went to the site and took blood samples from the sick dromedaries to carry out laboratory analyzes in order to determine the nature of the disease and administer the necessary treatments, reports the same site. The disease is not contagious and does not cause concern, assure veterinary sources. According to them, the probable cause is linked to the ingestion by the camels of toxic herbs or water from flood residues. The sick dromedaries are being treated and are receiving medication, pending the results of the laboratory analyzes, these sources added.
