Mysterious Illness Decimates Imported Goat Herd Near Tangier, Morocco

Breeders in the northern region are facing an unknown disease that seriously threatens their livestock. There are already reports of the contamination of about ten goats on a farm in the rural commune of Hjar Nhal, under the prefecture of Tangier-Assilah.
The breeder concerned, Zarki Ali, assured, in a statement to the daily Al Massae, that his livestock has been affected for ten days by a disease he has not been able to identify. This disease has caused him to lose "more than 40 Alpine goats out of the 150 imported from France after a great effort made for his farm," he claims.
"When there are a few damages, we can bear them, but when it is a major prejudice like this one, it becomes very difficult for the breeder to face it alone," he complained, adding that each goat of this caprine breed, originally from the Alps, costs around 6,000 DH and its milk production is estimated at 4 liters per day.
For the moment, the fact that Zarki Ali won the Prize for the Best Alpine Goat Breeder at the Meknes Agricultural Show in 2018 and 2019 is not really helping him to put an end to the suffering of his goats.
He is calling for the help of the Minister of Agriculture, Aziz Akhannouch, who for the moment has remained silent on the tragedy this breeder is experiencing, the newspaper writes.
