Mustapha Faris, Prominent Moroccan Statesman and Former Finance Minister, Dies at 90

Morocco is in mourning. Moroccan statesman, banker and author Mustapha Faris died on Tuesday, January 31 at the age of 90, according to his family.
Mustapha Faris held important positions within the government and several institutions in the country. He was Minister of Planning and Development, Minister of Finance, Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs.
After leading the Banque Nationale pour le Développement Économique for 15 years, he was appointed CEO of Banque Marocaine pour le Commerce et l’Industrie in 1994. He also held senior positions within Bank Al Maghrib, BMCE, CIH and SNI.
Born in Casablanca on December 17, 1933, Mustapha Faris is a graduate of the École Spéciale des Travaux Publics de Paris in 1956, and the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in 1959. In addition to his positions within the government and financial institutions, the deceased was the honorary president of the Moroccan Philharmonic Orchestra, Ciments du Maroc and the BNP Paribas BMCI Group. He was also the co-author of a book entitled "Regards croisés sur l’amitié: la coopération technique franco-marocaine" published in 2018.
