New Muslim Organization Challenges Established French Islamic Council

Driven by the association "Les Musulmans", the Union of Imams has just been created. It is in direct competition with the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM), which has expressed its intention to launch a similar structure.
Initiated by a former director of the Collective Against Islamophobia in France, the Union of Imams aims to bring together "beyond sensibilities". This initiative would have already attracted more than 200 imams and teachers, according to the Facebook page of the young structure.
For the organization, quoted by Le Figaro, "this assembly will not aim to deal with theological issues, to oppose personal convictions or to issue fatwas (religious opinions on a point of Islamic law)". "Too often, we are content to react or to issue press releases. It’s time to build for the long term," the organization recalls.
This structure also aims to offer imams a framework for "fraternal meetings", but also to exchange advice, particularly legal, with members facing difficulties in the exercise of their functions, and to facilitate their training.
The Union will also have the task of massively defending a colleague if he is unjustly pointed out," and to "set up a network, in order to be able to react quickly and in a concerted manner if necessary (dissemination of a press release or an op-ed, for example)" , and to "coordinate public demonstrations," reports the same source.
