MRE Morocco Customs: Prohibited Products & Import Rules

As the peak travel season to Morocco approaches, customs reminds travelers that all goods transported do not automatically qualify as personal effects. Certain products may enter the country, but only if the necessary authorizations or certificates are presented.

This is particularly the case for animals and animal products. Their importation requires a veterinary certificate issued by the competent services of the National Food Safety Office (ONSSA).

Animals and plants under control

Plant products are also subject to formalities. To bring them into Morocco, a phytosanitary certificate issued by the competent ONSSA services may be required.

The customs guide also mentions endangered wild fauna and flora species, as well as specimens of these species. In this case, a CITES certificate issued by the department in charge of Water and Forests is necessary.

These rules therefore concern products that may seem ordinary to some travelers, but which are subject to health, environmental or regulatory controls.

Books, telecommunications devices and new products

Books and publications may also be affected. The guide specifies that approval from the ministry in charge of Communication is required, except when imported for personal use. In this case, the traveler must provide a sworn declaration.

Telecommunications equipment can also cause problems. When the traveler carries more than one unit, approval from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) may be required.

Certain industrial products are also subject to standards control when imported in commercial quantities. The guide specifically mentions clothing, new shoes, cooking appliances or washing machines. In these cases, market access authorization issued by the department in charge of Industry and Trade may be requested.

Drones and remote-controlled objects under license

Unmanned flying objects, such as drones or certain model aircraft, are among products subject to import licensing. These are therefore not simple toys that can be freely transported in luggage.

Customs also lists bladed weapons of all kinds among products subject to licensing. These objects therefore require special formalities before any importation.

For MRE, the rule to remember is simple: before traveling with animals, plants, electronic equipment in multiple units, books in quantity or remote-controlled objects, it is better to check the required formalities. An authorized product can still be blocked if the requested document is not presented upon arrival.
