Morocco: your bank accounts and transfers under close surveillance

Financial intelligence, particularly through banks, is now emerging as a formidable weapon against money laundering in Morocco. The annual report of the ANRF, recently submitted to the Head of Government, describes an institution that is truly changing its operational scale in 2024.

The figures confirm this increase in power: 8,103 suspicious transaction reports were processed this year. A spectacular increase of more than 40% which is part of an underlying trend, the volume of reports having been multiplied by seven since 2018.

Banks remain the pillars of this vigilance, being the source of nearly 61% of the alerts. A new fact, non-financial professions are becoming more involved, with their declarations having doubled thanks to the awareness-raising efforts carried out by the Authority.

The institution no longer just analyzes, it actively investigates. Parallel financial investigations have soared by 30%, relying on more than 339,000 targeted information requests, particularly targeting the insurance and capital markets sectors.

This effectiveness is reflected in the judicial sphere with 84 cases referred to the public prosecutor’s offices, an increase of 18%. Investigators are now facing complex methods including cryptocurrencies and sports betting, requiring constant adaptation.
