Morocco wins its arm wrestling match against Algeria
Algeria has tried to modify the UNESCO registers, but Morocco has blocked it. Rabat has won a decisive diplomatic victory to protect the authenticity of its caftan, denouncing falsification maneuvers and a political exploitation of cultural heritage.
The permanent delegation of the Kingdom has seized the Secretariat of the 2003 Convention through an official protest. The letter addressed to the Attorney General of Culture points to illegal modifications made to elements already registered.
Morocco considers these actions as a direct attack on the credibility of the international organization. Morocco’s position is firm: the caftan constitutes an authentic heritage of the Kingdom and must be recognized worldwide as an exclusively national cultural symbol.
This institutional approach was accompanied by popular support. The file submitted included more than a hundred protest letters written by citizens and members of the diaspora.
These documents express a total rejection of any attempt to alter Morocco’s heritage identity. This diplomatic success allows the country to strengthen the protection of its historical rights against external claims.
