Morocco Welcomes Record 4.88 Million French Tourists in 2023, Topping Pre-Pandemic Levels

Morocco remains the preferred destination of the French outside Europe. In 2023, more than a third of the 14.5 million travelers who arrived in the kingdom come from the Hexagon.
According to figures from the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT), 4.88 million French people entered Morocco last year, far exceeding the number of Spanish and British tourists who visited the kingdom. The most visited cities are Marrakech, Agadir and Tangier. "We have even exceeded our 2019 figures, our reference year before the Covid crisis," notes the ONMT, stressing that the French represent more than a third of the 14.5 million tourists who arrived in the kingdom in 2023, or 33.6%.
With these figures, Morocco has achieved a record year, with arrivals recording a 34% increase compared to 2022, as indicated by the Ministry of Tourism in an official press release dated January 24. The government’s target for 2023 (13.5 million tourists) has been largely exceeded, despite the devastating earthquake of September 8 which led a significant number of tourists to postpone or even cancel their trips to Morocco.
In one year, the number of foreign tourists has increased by 41%, representing 49% of total arrivals. The remaining arrivals (51%) were made up of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs), an increase of 27% in one year. "This dynamic confirms the appeal of Morocco as a destination of choice, meeting the expectations of both the Moroccan diaspora and international travelers," confirm the Moroccan authorities to the newspaper Le Figaro.
