Morocco's Weather Agency Debunks Tropical Storm Rumors Amid Drought Concerns

The Directorate General of Meteorology under the Ministry of Equipment and Water has denied rumors of an impending tropical storm in Morocco and, by extension, the end of the severe drought that has been affecting the kingdom for a few years.

The weather conditions in Morocco "remain normal, except for some heavy thunderstorms, for which a generalized alert bulletin has been issued concerning the situation on Wednesday and Thursday," reassured the head of the communication service at the meteorology department.

In a statement to Hespress, the official added that "the observers at the meteorology department have detected the movement of tropical masses towards the north during the months of August and September," which could lead to heavy rainfall and flooding, as was the case last weekend in the Middle Atlas regions and some provinces in the southeast of the kingdom.

The head of the communication service recalled that the meteorology department issued on Wednesday an "orange alert bulletin" indicating that "these thunderstorms (20 to 35 millimeters) were expected in the provinces of Boulemane, Taza, Ifrane, Khénifra, Midelt, Sefrou, Al Hoceïma, Guercif, Driouch, Jerada and Taourirt".

Asmae Arbaoui, a university professor and expert in climate issues, confirmed that Morocco "remains safe and far from any tropical storm," calling for an end to these rumors that "sow panic among citizens." The expert specified that "the air mass currents come from the regions located north of the Moroccan coasts, and not from the south, as has been claimed."
