Morocco’s Wage Gap: 38% of Workers Earn Below Minimum Wage, CNSS Data Shows

38% of the salaries declared to the National Social Security Fund (CNSS) are below the Guaranteed Interprofessional Minimum Wage (SMIG), and 14% above 6,000 dirhams. In Morocco, the SMIG, currently set at 2,586 dirhams, should reach 2,698 dirhams, starting in July 2019.
According to CNSS statistics, 45% of declared women receive the SMIG, compared to 35% of men, while the average declared salary in 2018 is around 5,188 dirhams.
Out of the 242,000 people declared with a salary above 10,000 dirhams, 169,000 are men and 73,000 are women, representing 70% and 30% respectively.
The total number of companies making their declarations to the CNSS is 234,000 subscribers, with a payroll of 148 billion dirhams, representing 13.5% of GDP and 3.47 million employees. In 2018, 32% of women are declared to the CNSS, compared to only 22% in 1990.
However, a large majority of employees are not declared on a continuous basis, especially women. 31% of them have 156 days of work, which is equivalent to 6 months of work, while only 25% of them benefit from declarations throughout the year.
