Morocco’s Vacation Rental Market Rebounds as Borders Reopen for Summer Tourism

With the return of Moroccans living abroad (MREs) and the resumption of international flights, vacation homes are in high demand, making the owners happy, who were greatly affected by the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.
The summer of 2021 seems more serene, even if some restrictive measures have been strengthened to curb the spread of Covid-19. Fortunately, the success of the national Covid-19 vaccination campaign has allowed Morocco to open its borders and allow tourists to enjoy the wonders of the kingdom.
Thus, vacation homes have been stormed by foreign tourists, locals and MREs, especially in seaside towns or other popular destinations such as Agadir, Marrakech or Essaouira. According to a real estate agent, the enthusiasm started just at the end of school and university exams.
And since then, the influx has remained very encouraging with prices varying according to the type of real estate (residential complex, apartment or villa) and the duration of the rental. "Most of our current customers are MREs," he added. Professionals in the sector hope that at the end of the summer season, they will succeed in generating enough revenue to pay off the debts accumulated last season.
As for the prices, they generally vary between 400 to 700 dirhams per night for a beachfront apartment, with two bedrooms and a living room, while for villas, it takes between 1,200 and 2,000 dirhams, according to real estate agents.
According to statistics from the Mubawab website, Marrakech takes the largest share with 41% of the overall supply against 40% in 2020. The vacation rental market hopes to maintain the bar at this level, in order to recover after a trying year.
