Morocco Urges Respect for Maritime Freedom in Strait of Hormuz Amid Tensions

Morocco is concerned about maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. On Tuesday, July 23, 2019, Nasser Bourita, its Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, called for respect for freedom of maritime navigation.

Respect for freedom of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is non-negotiable. During a joint press conference with Mamadi Touré, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Guineans Abroad, who was setting foot in Morocco for the first time since his appointment, Nasser Bourita spoke unambiguously: "Morocco is following with concern the recent developments and calls for respect for freedom of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and respect for international law and the rules of maritime navigation, which must not suffer any constraint or interference."

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation hammered home: "This is an area under pressure where there are several tensions. We believe that a sense of responsibility must prevail and that freedom of movement and maritime navigation must be respected."

Likewise, Nasser Bourita made it known that "Morocco, like all countries, is concerned about the escalation and tension in the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks. The Kingdom is doing so as a member of the international community and also as a country that has special ties with the Gulf region."

He will recall that "the Kingdom has repeatedly condemned the activism and actions threatening stability and security in this region and has expressed its solidarity with the Arab Gulf countries each time their security and the tranquility of their citizens have been threatened."
