Morocco Urged to Reform Discriminatory Laws on International Women’s Day

Amnesty International is calling for "the modification of all discriminatory articles that still furnish the penal code". The NGO is seizing the opportunity of the world day of the struggle for women’s rights, to renew this call made to the government a few months ago.
The NGO calls on the El Othmani government to "work to end discrimination and violence against women, whether in law or in practice". It proposes, among other things, to "focus on the phenomenon of child marriage", to "criminalize marital rape", to "protect victims of rape", to "refrain from criminalizing sexual relations between adults outside the institution of marriage, homosexuality and abortion", to "give women the right to freely dispose of their bodies", to "make choices in matters of procreation", and finally to "improve their conditions by allowing them access to safe and legal abortions".
Amnesty International continues to work to ensure that the Moroccan government facilitates "the adoption of a comprehensive legislative and regulatory framework to eliminate sexual violence", the "taking of measures to make it easier for victims to access legal remedies", in addition to "support for appropriate medical treatment", including "access to emergency contraception", and "access to safe and legal abortion procedures".
