Morocco’s Urban Road Fatalities: 16 Dead, Over 2,000 Injured in One Week

The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has taken stock of traffic accidents that occurred in urban areas last week. In total, more than a dozen people lost their lives.
16 deaths and 2,096 injured, including 87 seriously, in 1,606 traffic accidents. This is the picture of road accidents in urban areas, during the week of August 5 to 11, according to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
According to the police, the causes of traffic accidents are multiple and varied. These include driver inattention, failure to yield the right-of-way, pedestrian inattention, speeding, lane changes without signaling, failure to maintain a safe distance, failure to stop, loss of control, unauthorized lane changes, failure to obey traffic signals, driving in the left lane, driving in the wrong direction, improper overtaking, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The security services recorded 38,229 tickets and drew up 7,864 reports, as part of control and repression operations for offenses. These tickets and reports were submitted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, adds the same source. As for the 30,365 transactional fines, they were collected.
In addition, the impounding of 3,823 vehicles, the seizure of 3,945 documents and the withdrawal from circulation of 96 cars generated a little more than 6 million dirhams, concludes the DGSN.
